Sunday Gold, 2022 | Team17 | Desktop
Senior UI / UX Designer

A narrative-rich, point-and-click adventure RPG with turn-based combat and puzzle-solving mechanics. Sunday Gold’s hybrid genre posed a unique UI/UX challenge: merging cinematic storytelling with deep RPG mechanics while maintaining clarity and responsiveness for a desktop audience.

As the Senior UI Artist and UX Designer, I was responsible for designing and implementing several core features including the Inventory, Jukebox, Mission Board, and Combat System interfaces.

Each feature had to balance stylized art direction with accessible functionality for players navigating dense layers of information.

My Role & Responsibilities

  • Led design for multiple core systems and HUD components

  • Created UX flows and wireframes for system navigation, combat, and inventory

  • Designed reusable UI assets and interaction logic aligned with narrative pacing

  • Worked closely with narrative, engineering, and production teams to integrate feedback loops and real-time transitions

  • Maintained visual consistency while developing stylized UI to support a noir-punk atmosphere

Process & Key UX Considerations

  • Genre Shifting: Balanced turn-based and real-time navigation UI within a unified experience. Ensured smooth player transition between point-and-click exploration and combat.

  • User Clarity: Reorganized and simplified the Inventory and Mission Board systems for visual hierarchy, faster scanning, and clearer objectives.

  • Diegetic UI & Immersion: Collaborated on the Jukebox interface to integrate in-game feedback and stylized visual design, maintaining immersion without sacrificing usability.

  • Design Systems Thinking: Developed modular UI components, hover states, and animation logic that could be reused across game modes and future updates.

Outcome & Impact

  • All major UI systems shipped successfully and were maintained post-launch

  • The Inventory UI and Combat interface received positive feedback from players and press for their clarity and stylized cohesion

  • Internally, the design system and assets I created were adopted for future updates and contributed to faster iteration across the team

  • My growing ownership over core systems led to a leadership role and stronger collaboration with cross-functional departments
